ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN SCHOOL HANDBOOK

2007-2008

A Brief History

Since its founding in 1848, St. John’s Lutheran Congregation of Arnold (formerly known as Beck Community) realized the importance of a sound program of Christian education as provided by a Lutheran Christian day school.

The church and school are grateful for the many sacrifices made by members of St. John’s on behalf of Christian education.  The blessings promised to those who sincerely believe made such sacrifices worthwhile, for our Lord says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6

We, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, welcome you into our church family and invite you to attend weekly worship opportunities with us.  The regular worship services are Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. Other opportunities to enrich your faith life and to praise God will be posted in the weekly Wildcat Newsletter and other mailings.

Mission Statement

The mission of St. John’s Lutheran School, with the guidance of God’s loving hand, is to share the Christian faith by assisting parents in providing opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth and training for children in a Christ-centered environment.

Vision Statement

St. John’s Lutheran School will be a leading resource for parents seeking quality Christian education for their children.

Philosophy

The school helps the family by designing an academic atmosphere that encourages the child’s spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth by:

§         Teaching God’s Word as revealed in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions.

§         Providing Bible study, prayer, and chapel worship on a daily/weekly basis.

§         Encouraging all families to attend worship and Bible study regularly.

§         Integrating the faith in all subjects.

§         Demonstrating the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ in instruction and discipline.

§         Providing for the personal, professional, and spiritual growth of faculty and staff members to serve as adult Christian role models.

§         Offering a professional staff as a resource to the family.

§         Pursuing academic excellence in all areas of education to the glory of God.

§         Caring for the mind and body emotionally, spiritually, physically and aesthetically through participation in physical education, health, sports, the fine arts and music.

§         Encouraging Christ-like behavior towards others in every aspect of life.

§         Identifying and developing the child’s God-given talents to minister to others.

§         Developing the child’s character to be a productive, high integrity member of the community with dedication to serving God by loving others.

These goals, we believe, are best fulfilled when the home and school work together in mutual cooperation and support of each other.

Enrollment Policies

Children are accepted for enrollment at St. John’s Lutheran School for each school year.  Re-enrollment procedures must be completed each year.  St. John’s Lutheran School reserves the right to limit or restrict admissions and re-enrollment if there is an inability to offer services which adequately serve children with certain learning disabilities, limited achievement, or behavioral and/or emotional problems.  All students are accepted on the premise that they will apply themselves according to the ability God has given them, conform to the rules and regulations of the school and respect the religious teachings as set forth in the Lutheran Confessions.  Parents are likewise encouraged to be supportive of Lutheran education by becoming actively involved in the life of the school, regular in prayer for the school and staff, and faithful in church attendance with their children.

Decisions for admissions and re-enrollment are made annually.  The best interests of the child and the child’s peer group will be of utmost importance when making these decisions.  In cases where special needs are present, the principal will not enroll or re-enroll a student without a consultation with at least one of the following:  the child’s teachers, learning consultants, the school counselor and other professionals.

Non-discrimination Policy

St. John’s Lutheran School freely admits students of any race, color, creed, nationality, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities available to all students.

Enrollment Procedures

Parents interested in St. John’s Lutheran School should contact the office and arrange for a tour of the facilities, observation of classrooms, and a personal interview with the principal.  Discussion will focus on our philosophy of Christian education, St. John’s curriculum, programs and procedures, and the needs and wants of the prospective student and family.

Parents who have toured the school and met with the principal are encouraged to apply for the enrollment of their child.  After the application form, the authorization form to contact former schools and a copy of the child’s birth certificate have been received, the child will be considered for enrollment.  The needs of the child, as well as the needs of the rest of the students in the classroom, are high on the list of priorities for consideration.  The student’s present level of achievement, behavior and discipline concerns, the parents’ past tuition payment history, present class size and special needs, and the demands on faculty and staff will all be considered as applications are reviewed.

The principal, with the assistance of other professionals, when warranted, will make decisions regarding enrollment and re-enrollment and will contact parents to notify them of the decision.

Age Requirements

To enter Kindergarten, a pupil must reach the age of five before August 1st.  There are no age requirements in the other grades if a student has successfully completed the previous grade at St. John’s or another school (with a recommendation from the former school administration).

Priorities for enrollment

Order of Admission for next school term:

                        1. member families of St. John’s Lutheran Church

                         2.current students in pre-kindergarten - 7th  and their siblings

3.member families of sister Lutheran congregations.

4.non-member families who desire a Christian education for their children

The number of children that can be adequately served is determined by available facilities and the financial capabilities of the congregation (See motion Feb. 1984.)  A maximum of 25 students per classroom is recommended.

Student Transfer

According to the Safe Schools Act, St. John’s Lutheran School must immediately release all records of a student to schools when the following 2 requirements have been met:

  1. We must have received written permission from the parents or guardians.

  2. All outstanding accounts must be paid in full.

Prior to accepting a student transferring from another school system the following requirements must be met:

  1. All outstanding accounts to the previous institution have been paid.

  2. The principal will contact the student’s previous school to determine appropriate placement of the student.

  3. Students applying for grades 7 and 8 placement must receive Board of Education approval and may be accepted on a probationary basis.

  4. Students applying for grade placement after first semester must receive Board of Christian Day School approval.

Emergency Forms

At the beginning of the school year, emergency information will be sent home.  These forms are the school’s primary source of information about whom to contact in time of an emergency.  The form should be completed and returned to the school office during the first week of school.

In the event of an injury, the parent will be contacted as quickly as possible.  If the parents cannot be reached, the parties named on the emergency form will be contacted.  In an emergency, the faculty and staff of St. John’s Lutheran School will not hesitate to call 911 for assistance.

It is the parents’ responsibility to make certain that the names and telephone numbers on the student’s emergency form remain current throughout the school year.

Health Records

All children must have received a complete and current set of immunizations before the first day of school as required by Missouri State and Jefferson County health ordinances.  Failure to do so will require exclusion from school until the student is in complete compliance.  Immunization records must contain the day, month and year of each inoculation and must be accompanied by a physician’s signature attesting to their accuracy. Parents receive the Missouri Department of Health listing of immunization requirements for the current school year at registration.  Additional forms are available in the school office.

Physical Examinations

Students new to St. John’s Lutheran School are required to have a physical examination by a medical doctor within six months of the start of the school year.

Communicable Disease Policy

A student will not be permitted to attend classes or other school sponsored activities if the student is known to be afflicted with, or liable to transmit any contagious disease, unless the Christian Day School Board of St. John’s Lutheran School or its designee, has determined, based on medical evidence, that:  (1) the student is no longer infected or liable to transmit the disease; or (2) the student is afflicted with a chronic infectious disease which poses little risk of transmission in the school environment with reasonable precautions.

Guidelines for student attendance:

  1. Pinkeye:  Student must be treated 24 hours before returning to school.

  2. Lice:  Student must be completely nit free.

  3. Other communicable illnesses:  Student must be treated for 24 hours or symptom free for 24 hours.

  4. Fever:  If temperature is over 99.6 in a.m. or 100 in p.m., student must remain at home.  Students should be fever free for 24 hours.

  5. Children who are to remain inside for 3 concurrent days during recess must have a note from a physician.

  6. Children who are to miss 3 concurrent sessions of P.E. must have a note from a physician.

Medications

While it is recognized that many students are able to attend school because of the effective use of medication in the treatment of illness and disabilities, every precaution must be taken to insure that our students are safely and prudently medicated as their physician directs to avoid potential misuse.  Therefore, in compliance with Missouri laws, the following guidelines must be observed for the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications at school:

  1. Each year written permission must be given by doctor and parent for any medication (prescription and over-the-counter medicines) dispensed.  The order must indicate the student’s name, dosage and the time the medication should be dispensed.  A form is available in the school office.

  2. A list of possible side effects must be provided.

  3. Drugs must be in the prescription bottle (original container for non-prescription drugs) and must be delivered to the office by the parent (or car pool driver) only.  In cases of refills, the bottles must be changed at each refill.  Your pharmacist will give you a school and a home container.

  4. All medications will be locked in the school office and administered by trained staff.

  5. Students must turn in all medication to the office.  No student may use medications at school without following the above guidelines.  If a student has severe medical problems that require self-medication, please contact the school office to complete the required form.

  6. “Chapstick” and ointments applied to the mouth, and cough drops are considered medications.

Financial Support

St. John’s Lutheran School is essentially a tuition driven institution.  Families pay direct family support, St. John’s Lutheran Church pays congregational support and additional funding comes through grants and fundraising activities.

§         Outstanding fees need to be current before report cards may be issued.

§         If outstanding fees are more than 60 days delinquent, student’s attendance at school will be suspended until all fees are current.

Tuition Assistance

St. John’s Lutheran School and Church desire that all children have the opportunity for a Christian education.  Money has been budgeted to provide partial funding for church families unable to pay the full tuition costs.  St. John’s has contracted with Tuition Aid Data Services to provide confidential objective assessment of financial needs.  Parents who wish to be considered for financial aid should contact the school office for a TADS application and further information.

Additional Fees

St. John’s offers a band program to students in grades 5-8.  This elective course of study is made possible through collaboration with Lutheran High School South.  Parents are assessed fees for each student in the band program.

The Parent-Teacher League, a parent involvement agency, which actively supports the students by providing activities and funding, assesses each school family $50.00.  This fee can be reduced by active participation in the fall fundraiser.

SCRIP INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM

St. John’s Scrip Program offers a wonderful way to buy your groceries, gas, clothing, home improvement products and other items needed for your daily living.  Simply use St. John’s Scrip gift cards when making your purchases.  You receive full value for your gift card while the school receives a percentage bonus for each scrip purchase!  We expect a minimum of $250 monthly participation in the program for all families who have student(s) enrolled.  Grandparents and friends are welcome to participate, too!

Books and Supplies

St. John’s will supply each student all academic textbooks as required for the established curriculum.  It is the student’s responsibility to care for the books provided. All hard cover books are to have book covers. Books that have been abused or damaged beyond normal wear and tear will be subject to a fine or replacement cost.

Students in grade 3 and new students in grades 4-8 will be given their own New International Version Bible by St. John’s Lutheran Sunday School.

Classroom supply lists with specific requirements for each class will be mailed to parents with other pertinent information prior to the start of school or given to parents at the orientation meeting in August. Children are expected to come to the first day of school fully equipped[DS1] .

Use of Computers

Pupils may use the computers only when authorized to do so by their teacher.  Students are not to turn the computers on or off unless instructed to do so by a member of the St. John’s staff.

A student should not bring toys, games, radios, balls, bats, skateboard, etc. to school unless prior approval has been obtained.  In any event, the school will not assume responsibility for any such item. Balls smaller than a tennis ball are not allowed.

Attendance

If satisfactory progress is to be made by a student, regular attendance is a must.  It is the parents’ responsibility to see that their children are in regular attendance during the school year.  Students who accrue 30 days of absenteeism must have Board of Christian Day School approval before reenrolling.  Excessive absenteeism may result in a referral to the Division of Family Services.

Reporting Student Absences

Written excuses signed by a parent and/or phone calls are necessary for all absences or tardiness known in advance.  If a student is absent and the teacher has not been notified in advance, the parent should call the school office by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence.  Parents not reporting absences will be called at home or at work to verify student absences.  One-half day absence will be reached when a student is absent from school for an accumulated time of 105 minutes or more.  A student must be in school for 105 minutes to count for half-day.

Homework may be picked up at the school office after 3:05 p.m. each day.

Tardiness

Since tardy students disrupt classroom activities and hinder learning, parents should make certain that their children are in the classroom by 8:10 a.m. and have time to get to their desks and be ready for classroom opening by 8:15 a.m. each morning.  A student is given four periods of grace each quarter.  Thereafter a fee of $5.00 per tardy is assessed.

Parents who respect the school rules by being prompt are establishing a good work habit for their children.  If the occasional tardy does occur, please inform the school office explaining the tardy.

Leaving School Grounds

Students must have written permission from their parents to leave school grounds at any time during the school day.  The school day is defined to include all before school and after school activities.  Parents must report to the school office and sign their children out of school.  When permission has been granted, parents will have full responsibility for the child departing the school grounds.

Christian Behavior

We have every reason to be proud of our facilities.  We can show our appreciation by not marring the walls, furniture, floors or restrooms.  Any person found guilty of damaging or attempting to damage or deface school property will need to repair the damage or purchase new materials to replace that which has been damaged.  Willful damage to or destruction of school property is grounds for suspension.

Out of consideration to the learning process, walking and quiet voices are required in the building.

Gum Chewing in the Building is Prohibited

School Visitation

Parents are welcome to visit school frequently. As primary models of Christian behavior it is expected that they display appropriate respect for the policies and procedures of St. John’s Lutheran School. All visitors must report to the office upon entering the building.  Students from other schools are welcome to visit classrooms with prior authorization from the principal.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment of any kind will not be tolerated at St. John’s Lutheran School.  Any student feeling that he/she is a victim should contact the principal immediately.  The discipline policy will be followed when deemed necessary.

Discipline Policy

To discipline means to make a disciple or follower.  We expect our students to follow the loving example of Jesus Christ.

We are committed to a cooperative effort with parents and children to provide an atmosphere that is God-pleasing.  Characteristics of such an atmosphere include the following:

  1. Students who demonstrate their faith in Christ through their words and actions.

  2. Students who do their part in maintaining a cooperative learning environment.  They exhibit pride in their school, their own learning and accomplishments, and the accomplishments of their schoolmates.

  3. Students who respect their teachers, staff, parents, fellow students, school and themselves.

  4. Students who know and obey the rules and decisions of those in authority.

  5. Students who are accountable for their own actions and realize that with privileges there are always responsibilities.

Procedures for Dealing with Misbehavior

  1. The teachers have established classroom discipline plans, which provide a safe and productive environment in which students can learn and grow in the knowledge of God.  Teachers use a variety of methods, which are consistent with God’s Word to encourage obedience to the rules.  Classroom discipline plans will be shared with parents and students at the beginning of the school year.

  2. The teacher will meet with parents and student when a student has frequent difficulty following rules and procedures.

  3. If the parents and teacher cannot reach a solution, the teacher will consult with the principal.  The principal may choose to use several means of discipline including suspension, probation, and expulsion.

  4. A student may be expelled from school by the Christian Day School Board upon the recommendation of the principal.

  5. When personal or school property is damaged or destroyed, a specific dollar amount will be assessed for the loss.  Students, or their parents, are required to make prompt payment.

  6. A discipline code is included in this handbook and should be reviewed together by parents and students.

In-school Suspension:  The student is suspended from attending regular classes.  The student will be expected to work on class assignments in a designated area and to remain current with class projects.  The parent will be notified of the suspension.  Also, the student is suspended from all extracurricular privileges during this time.  If required, a substitute teacher will be hired at the parent’s expense to supervise the in-school suspension.

Out-of-school Suspension

An out-of-school suspension requires that the student be deprived of all privileges of attending school for a specified number of days.  The student will be expected to work on class assignments and to remain current with class projects.  The student will be expected to turn in completed assignments.  All extracurricular privileges are also suspended

Probation

A specific length of time may be designated as a probationary period during which a student will be allowed to participate in school activities under certain conditions. This applies to students who may be admitted to St. John’s Lutheran School under special conditions and to students who are suspended. Periods of probation will be monitored by the teacher and/or principal and reported to the Board of Christian Day School.

Expulsion

Students may be expelled from the school by recommendation of the principal and approval of St. John’s Lutheran Christian Day School Board.

Corporal Punishment

Corporal punishment is defined here as any physical handling of a student for the purpose of bringing about conforming behavior and/or to carry out an employee/volunteer request.  Students at St. John’s Lutheran School will not be subjected to corporal punishment.

Physical restraint may be used by staff members, in extreme out of control incidents, when a student needs to be protected from himself/herself or is threatening to other individuals or to school property.

Communication

School Directories are distributed to families each year.  It includes a list of addresses and phone numbers of students and their parents and other pertinent information.

Newsletter – The youngest student in each family will receive the weekly newsletter each Thursday.  Items for the newsletter must be submitted to the office in writing by Monday and will be printed as space allows.

Bulletin Boards – A bulletin board is on the wall near the school office.  This area is used to post news items concerning St. John’s Lutheran School and our school families.

Student Progress Reports

Primary level teachers frequently share reports of student progress; most send home weekly parent letters as well as individual notes as needed.  In addition to verbal reports and letters to parents, teachers of students in grades 4-8 give written midterm progress reports to parents each quarter.  Report cards are issued to all students quarterly.  Midterm reports and quarterly report cards are to be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher as soon as possible.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parents meet with their child’s teacher at the end of the first quarter.  Report cards will be given to parents at the conference.  Additional conferences throughout the year will be scheduled at the request of either parent or teacher.

Problem Resolution

In keeping with the teaching of Matthew 18, we ask that parents follow the guidelines for conflict resolution as outlined below:

  1. Contact the staff member or members involved and request a conference to openly express your concerns.  As a result of the conference, a course of action will be devised by the staff member and parent.  Additional help will be secured when needed.  Within two weeks parent and staff member should meet again to review progress.

  2. If concerns still exist, or if the problem remains unresolved, contact the school principal and a conference will be arranged with the parent, staff member, and principal.  Together we will work with the resources necessary to resolve the concern.  A second meeting will be arranged to discuss progress toward resolving the concern.

  3. On the rare occasion when the above two steps have failed to resolve a concern or problem, the parent and/or teacher shall contact the principal to request a meeting with the Christian Day School Board.  The Christian Day School Board will determine the validity of meeting with the parent or teacher.

School Cancellation

When school must be canceled or the school hours altered because of an emergency, usually due to weather conditions, St. John’s Lutheran School information will be announced in the following ways:

KTVI  television channel #2 starting at 5:30 a.m.

            KMOV television channel # 4 starting at 5:30 a.m.

            KSDK television channel # 5 starting at 5:30  a.m.

KMOX radio (1120 AM) starting at 5:30 a.m.

The school is listed as St. John’s Lutheran School in Arnold.

Once the school day has begun, we will not dismiss before the close of the day.  Parents are asked to use their best judgment regarding safe road conditions and to pick up their children as they deem best.  We do ask, however, that parents pick up all children from the office, and that, if another adult beyond the normal car pool is to transport the student, the parent is to notify the office before the child is released.

Please remember, do not drive to school if you do not feel comfortable with road conditions.  The school will understand.  Let safety be the guide.  When the school day is canceled the school-sponsored activities that day are also canceled.

There are occasions when school will have a “delayed start.” A “delayed start” consists of the following:

§         The school building is open at 6:30 a.m. as usual.

§         Official classes begin at a time determined by the principal (usually 9:15 a.m.)

§         Children will be expected to gather in the Extended Care Program.  They will not be charged for the time period between 8:00 a.m. and the start of official classes.

Standardized Dress Code

As Christians, we are guided by a sense of responsibility for neatness, cleanliness, modesty and safety.  Not only can clothing fashions and styles affect personal behavior, but we also believe that there is a relationship between the way one perceives the world and himself/ herself, and the way one dresses..  In the educational setting at St. John’s Lutheran School, standards of appearance need to be consistent with Christian thought and values.  The following factors apply to the dress code:

    1. School dress must be safe for school activities in and out of the classroom.

    2. A school dress code is a learning experience in the sense that it helps students become more responsible and accountable.
